*This is a temporary full-time position with a projected end date of November 1, 2024.*

The Specimen Digitizer will facilitate the digitization of herbarium specimens from Africa in the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium at The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) as part of a multi-institutional NSF-funded project: Digitization TCN: Collaborative Research: Digitization and Enrichment of U.S. Herbarium Data from Tropical Africa to Enable Urgent Quantitative Conservation Assessments.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Participate in¬†the effort to barcode, image, and transcribe collection data for¬†100,000 NYBG herbarium specimens collected¬†in Africa.

‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Assist in training interns and volunteers who barcode, image, and/or transcribe specimen data at NYBG for this project.


‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Experience with herbarium¬†specimen data capture and imaging procedures

‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Experience with¬†specimen database software and digital photography hardware

‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Knowledge of plant taxonomy and nomenclature

‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Familiarity with Herbarium procedures

‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Familiarity with African geography

‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Understanding of written languages in addition to English a plus

‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Ability to work closely with others as part of a team and be able to communicate effectively

‚Äʬ†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Undergraduate degree in biology

Salary: $41,000
