Junior Specialist (Curatorial Assistant) at UC Davis Center for Plant Diversity (herbarium)

This Jr. Specialist position is responsible for assisting Center for Plant Diversity (herbarium) staff in specimen curation and overseeing outreach events, including those associated with the Davis Botanical Society. Responsibilities include supervising students and volunteers in routine curation tasks, supervision of database use and editing, running outreach events, giving tours, and supervising gift processing. Tasks include:

Supervising undergraduates in specimen curation, including label-making, georeferencing, imaging, mounting, and filing. (50%)

Planning, recruiting helpers for, and attending Center for Plant Diversity outreach events (some of which are on weekends or evenings), such as curation volunteer days, museum botanical teas, Biodiversity Museum Day, Picnic Day, workshops, and botanical lectures. (30%)

Supervising the processing of membership gifts received by the Davis Botanical Society. (5%)

Assisting with specimen database and website maintenance, as well as museum Facebook page, including interfacing with the Consortium of California Herbaria and other database aggregators, updating events pages on website and Facebook, and trouble-shooting problems that may arise. (15%)

Qualifications
B.S./B.A. in Life Sciences required; M.S./M.A. in Life Sciences or Museum Collection Management is preferred.
Previous herbarium experience is required.
Previous experience with plant taxonomy and knowledge of flowering plant families and genera is required.
Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and Access is required; experience with Dreamweaver is preferred.
Familiarity with world geography/place names is preferred.
Experience with georeferencing specimens is preferred.
Experience working with specimen imaging is preferred.
All aspects of this position require great attention to detail and organizational skills.
Good written and verbal communication skills are required.
Good people skills are required; experience giving tours or working with groups is preferred.
Term of Appointment: Full time for 1 year, with the possibility of extension.
Salary: $3,036.00/mo plus benefits
